That is worth saying plainly, because the most common reason a dead car stays parked for a year is that the owner assumes the first step is expensive. It is not. The first step is a phone call describing roughly what happened, and the number comes back on that same call.

Why a car that doesn't start is still worth real money
The assumption behind most dead cars sitting in Banff parking stalls is that a vehicle which cannot move is worth nothing. It is one of the more expensive assumptions a person can make.
A vehicle that does not start is priced on what can be reused from it, and one failed component does not empty that list. A car with a seized engine still has a working transmission, a drivetrain, wheels, glass, panels, seats, a catalytic converter, electronic modules and a wiring harness. On a 2015 or newer vehicle that list is worth thousands. On an older one it is worth hundreds, which is still considerably more than nothing.
Drivetrain matters here in particular. Almost every vehicle in this valley is AWD or 4x4, and those components move steadily in the Alberta parts market. A dead Subaru or a 4Runner that will not turn over is a better vehicle to us than a running front-wheel-drive sedan of the same age.
What genuinely lowers the number is a vehicle that has already been stripped. If the engine has been pulled or the converter is gone, say so on the call. It changes the figure, but it does not end the conversation.
Should you repair it or sell it?
This is the decision most owners are actually stuck on, so here is the arithmetic.
A rebuilt engine or a transmission replacement typically runs into several thousand dollars once parts and labor are counted. Compare that against two numbers: what the vehicle is worth running, and what we will pay for it not running. If the repair costs more than the difference between those two figures, repairing it loses money. That is the whole calculation.
On an older high-mileage vehicle the repair almost never makes sense, because the difference between running and not running is smaller than the cost of the work. On a newer vehicle with low mileage it sometimes does, and we will say so.
There is a second cost specific to Banff. The vehicle already cannot move under its own power, so any repair starts with a tow before a mechanic has looked at it, and specialist work may mean a tow out of the valley. That expense lands on the repair side of the calculation, never on the selling side, because our towing is included.

Everything the pickup requires is on our side. Towing is included in the offer, the equipment handles a vehicle that cannot roll or steer, and winching a car off flat tires is part of the job rather than an extra.
